Global Coalition Must
React Responsibly to Haiti Crisis
"The devastating impact of natural disaster could
be mitigated by a mobilization of the same broad coalition of powers in favor of a renewed battle
against underdevelopment, beginning with the inequality of the earth's wrath."

At a time when Haiti counts its dead by the thousands and its injured and homeless by the tens of thousands, the
international community has mobilized. The disaster is unique, as are
the reactions of solidarity. And that's fortunate. The nearby United States is on
the front line, sending soldiers in numbers capable of securing the airport at
Port-au-Prince, an aircraft carrier and portable structures equipped with
valuable medical resources. Ships, aircraft, research teams,
equipment, Europe and Asia, Oceania and Africa, all mobilizing to provide
Haitians with the relief they need. Financial institutions and states
have come up with millions of dollars and have suggested canceling the debt of
a country among the poorest in the world. Again, this is all to the good.

But when the emergency passes, Haiti will need long-term
assistance. Perhaps soon, one day, anyway, there
will be other poor countries and other natural disasters. Their devastating impact could
be mitigated by a mobilization of the same broad coalition of powers in favor of a genuine renewed
political and economic battle against underdevelopment, beginning with the inequality of the earth's wrath.
