U.S. citizens: Unintimidated by drug violence in Mexico

Despite Dangers, U.S. Citizens Flock to Mexico in 2012 (La Jornada, Mexico)

“Although the number of U.S. citizens killed in Mexico by Mexican criminal organizations has tripled in the last five years, from 35 in 2007 to 120 in 2011, Mexico remains the top U.S. tourist destination, in part thanks to proximity and the economy in a time of financial crisis.”

Mexico – La Jornada – Original Article (Spanish)

Mexico City: More than two million Americans visited Mexico in the first half of the year, 11 percent more than were recorded in the same period of 2011, despite repeated warnings from the country’s government against visiting Mexico due to drug-related violence.

Information released by the U.S. State Department shows that during summer, the number of visitors from that country is expected to reach 4 million, despite warnings about the dangers of travelling to Mexico and reports by Mexican authorities themselves that indicate that the violence has increased and spread to 18 additional cities in recent months.

It also emphasizes that the violence that plagues much of the country has failed to intimidate Mexican-Americans and U.S. citizens from visiting family in Mexico.

"Although the number of U.S. citizens killed in Mexico by Mexican criminal organizations has tripled in the last five years, from 35 in 2007 to 120 in 2011, Mexico remains the top U.S. tourist destination, in part thanks to proximity and the economy in a time of financial crisis," the State Department says.
